Your Body is Not the Enemy
Most people believe their body works against them– but this is far from the truth. I have spent years studying the miraculous wonders of the human body and how it constantly is fighting to find homeostasis, or balance. The issue does not lie within the complex system of the body, but in the external factors we expose ourselves to. Some are self inflicted, yet others are unavoidable –a topic for another time.
Believing our bodies are capable of achieving miracles is one of the first steps to true healing and that is what I am here to help you understand.
Your body fights for you every second of the day. Think about the heart. Place your hand there and feel the beating of the heart. This is your center –where love and joy are found. Blood is constantly pushed from the heart to supply the rest of your organs with oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. Your heart beats with its very own complex electrical system – the heart can keep beating on its own if even the rest of the body is dead.
Think about your liver, also known as a “super organ.” The liver detoxifies the body from the constant flood of toxins from the world and what we consume. The liver promotes immune function and metabolism. It can even regenerate itself!
These are only two of the major organs that work tirelessly for us every day, but yet, we have unfortunately lost sight of this. Oftentimes, we abuse our bodies because we have not taken the time to remember what it does for us every second of the day. Abusing the body can look like eating foods we know are toxic to us or sitting on the couch all day and not moving our bodies. Our society has normalized this way of life–living a sedentary lifestyle and eating the Standard American Diet (SAD).
The reason for this is because we have taken the awe and wonder out of the human body. Instead of gratitude, we meet our body with frustration.
We just expect our bodies to work for us and get frustrated with it when it can no longer perform as it's supposed to. We have been taught to think of our bodies as the enemy and to believe that they just break down and work against us. However, in reality, your body is responding to how you are treating it. The human body will always find a way to survive, but it will need to work harder and smarter if we consistently abuse it.
Our bodies will send us signs and clues as to what it needs, which are the physical symptoms you may be feeling.
Simple examples:
Your muscles feel fatigued, you need rest.
Your lips feel chapped, you need water (or a cute chapstick).
Your stomach grumbles, you need food.
Unfortunately, it has gotten to the point that these physical symptoms have become so complicated, we don’t even know what we need anymore. The reason for this is because we are so far disconnected from the body. The busy lifestyle we have cultivated in this society does not allow us to slow down for one second. We are not able to focus on ourselves and listen to what our bodies need.
Sometimes the physical symptoms patients present with may be a simple fix, such as “you need to drink more water and eat a cleaner diet”. However, we have now been seeing a surge of individuals who present with a complex list of physical symptoms that just simply drinking more water cannot fix. The unfortunate reality is that these patients have been disconnected from their body for so long and have been unable to recognize the signs from their bodies. The body has suffered abuse (lack of physical movement, SAD diet, emotional dysregulation, lack of sleep) for too long that now the body is “screaming.”
We need to return back home to the body and find our roots again.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
Life is miraculous. Our bodies have spiritual powers of God in us. God created us in his image, with his miraculous ways. Take a step back and think about how amazing it is to create life from two cells! Think about how profound our bodies are and how amazing their functions are to keep us alive every second of the day and find gratitude for your body. Say thank you to your body that it works for you.
It is a dangerous thought to think that human beings are no longer miraculous. We have removed the awe out of human life. It is dangerous to step away from this power that you hold. Maybe in today’s society, they want you to think you are not miraculous. But,
PLEASE LISTEN WHEN I SAY:
YOU. ARE. MIRACULOUS.
Your body is made to work for you, and not against you. You can heal your body, but you just need to shift your perspective. You have the spirit of God within your body.
Xoxo,
Elyse
